Chennai witnessed political drama on Monday as AIADMK legislators, led by their prominent leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly. The protest stemmed from Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar's refusal to permit a discussion on the contentious Mekedatu issue.
The Speaker clarified that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) had decided against holding a Question Hour or Zero Hour during the sitting. He further noted that a resolution concerning Mekedatu had already been unanimously accepted by all parties. Despite this, Mr. Palaniswami insisted on bringing up the matter, emphasizing its "vital importance to Tamil Nadu."
A brief but intense exchange occurred between the AIADMK members and the Speaker, who reiterated that the House was bound by the BAC's decision. Unable to proceed with their discussion, the AIADMK legislators, including general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, exited the House in protest, citing that the opposition was "not given a chance to speak" on public issues.
