The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a magnitude 7.1 earthquake, with its epicenter located west of Morón, along Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, about 168 kilometers west of Caracas. This first tremor, with a depth of 22 kilometers, was quickly followed by an even more potent 7.5-magnitude quake just one minute later. The second, shallower quake, at a depth of 10 kilometers, struck 16 kilometers southwest of Morón, intensifying the panic. These seismic events are among the strongest Venezuela has experienced in over a century, leaving a profound impact on residents.
As the ground began to move shortly after 6 p.m. local time, buildings across Caracas swayed violently, prompting immediate evacuations. Thousands poured into the streets, many visibly shocked and disoriented. Eyewitnesses reported seeing entire walls collapse, with furniture now exposed from the street level. Dust columns rose from various neighborhoods, transforming once-bustling areas into scenes of disarray.
Residents remained on the streets long after sunset, some seeking comfort by hugging their pets amidst the gathering dust. Hector Ricci, a Caracas resident, recounted the experience: "It started off gently and then gradually grew, and in the end, we all had to leave our houses, go outside and gather together." The Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, confirmed that the quake was felt in several states and highlighted "alarming situations" in Caracas’s Altamira neighborhood, where collapsed homes and buildings were reported. He hinted at potential injuries and urged motorists to clear roads for emergency vehicles, signaling the need for immediate medical attention. Further reports indicated tsunami threats in surrounding areas following the powerful tremors.
