Rohini Acharya, daughter of Lalu Prasad, announced on social media that she is quitting politics and disowning her family following the RJD's rout in the Bihar assembly elections. The Mahagathbandhan's performance was a significant setback, and the party managed to win only 25 seats. She said the decision was taken on the advice of Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, and that she would take all the blame for the outcome.
Rohini is Tejashwi Yadav's sister. Sanjay Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP and a trusted aide to Tejashwi, while Rameez Alam is described as Tejashwi’s old friend from Uttar Pradesh’s political circles. The family has already faced public strains, including the earlier expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav from the party and the subsequent formation of Janshakti Janata Dal, which did not perform in the elections. Rohini had previously donated a kidney to her father and contested last year’s Lok Sabha seat from Saran, though she did not win, and she actively campaigned for Tejashwi during the Bihar polls. The RJD’s tally dropped from 75 to 24 seats in the assembly, underscoring the scale of the setback.
Analysts say the move signals deeper rifts within the family’s political orbit and could shape the party’s leadership conversations going forward. For now, Rohini’s exit adds a personal dimension to Bihar’s poll fallout as the party seeks to regroup and map a strategy for future elections.
