Modi proposes G20 initiative to counter drug-terror nexus
Modi urges a dedicated G20 framework to disrupt the global drug–terror economy, linking finance, governance and security at the Johannesburg summit.
At the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Modi proposed a dedicated Global Initiative on Countering the Drug-terror Nexus. He warned that highly lethal drugs like fentanyl pose a mounting threat to public health, social stability, and global security, while also financing terrorism.
The proposed G20 Initiative would unite financial, governance, and security tools to weaken the drug-terror economy. He said cross-border cooperation is essential, noting ongoing coordination with foreign anti-drug agencies, including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, to crack down on trafficking networks.
As part of a broader push, India aims to make the country drug-free by 2047, a goal that aligns with steps to intensify enforcement and rehabilitation. In July, India's Narcotics Control Bureau, working with partners in the U.S. and Australia, busted a global drugs network by arresting a money launderer and targeting illegal drug factories and call centers.
The initiative underscores a global multilateral approach to curb trafficking and financing of extremism, linking economic policy with health outcomes. Modi emphasized that addressing the drug-terror nexus requires synchronized actions across finance, governance, and security, leveraging existing alliances within the G20 and beyond.
