Assam has issued a high alert following extremely heavy rainfall and devastating flash floods reported in Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Subansiri district. The severe weather, which hit mostly between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, saw Yazali record a staggering 72.8 mm of rain in just 24 hours.
The high volume of rainfall has led to flash floods and a significant increase in river discharge in the upper catchment areas. Reports from Yazali indicate widespread damage to houses and crucial infrastructure due to flash floods accompanied by debris flow. Adding to the concern, officials have confirmed that three people are currently unaccounted for in Arunachal Pradesh, with initial reports suggesting one missing person.
Authorities had to take immediate operational measures at the Panyor Lower Hydroelectric Project (formerly Ranganadi Hydroelectric Project) area, opening one spillway gate to release excess water due to the sudden surge in inflows. This action, while necessary, further contributes to the downstream flow.
The impact is now extending to Assam, where a substantial rise in water levels and flow velocity in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is anticipated. Districts expected to be affected include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, and Sonitpur. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the situation is being monitored at the highest level, with district administrations and line departments urged to maintain close vigilance and prepare timely preventive and response measures.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other emergency response agencies are on standby, ready to assist in any emerging situation. Residents in the potentially affected areas are advised to stay informed and follow local authority guidelines as the region braces for further developments.
