YSRCP MPs press for central intervention to restore order in Andhra Pradesh, seek greater Polavaram funding, and raise concerns on public institutions and key projects.
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday and held discussions on parliamentary procedures and effective conduct of House business. The focus wasn’t only on etiquette and procedure; the MPs proposed a dedicated helpline for Members of Parliament to promptly address issues, and Birla responded positively to the suggestion. The lawmakers, including floor leader P.V. Mithun Reddy and MPs Maddila Gurumurthy and G. Thanuja, later felicitated the Speaker.
During the session, the MPs raised concerns about deteriorating law and order in Andhra Pradesh, urging central intervention to restore normalcy. Speaking during the motion of thanks to the President’s address, MP Golla Babu Rao cited attacks on political opponents, destruction of houses, and arson, and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to act to stabilize the state.
On policy and funding, the MPs demanded enhanced central support for the Polavaram project, arguing that the current allocation of ₹3,320 crore is inadequate and urging the fixation of the project height at 45 metres.
The discussion also touched on broader issues, including opposition to the privatisation of medical colleges, which the MPs argued reflected public sentiment as shown by one-crore signatures against the move. They also highlighted unresolved concerns surrounding the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, including a lack of captive mines.
Overall, the MPs portrayed a picture of rising tensions and administrative gaps in the state, while signaling a push for central accountability and improved coordination between state and central authorities. The Speaker’s positive response to the helpline proposal was presented as a potential first step toward greater institutional support for MPs and more effective House proceedings.
