History Made! German Startup Launches First Rocket to Orbit from European Soil 🚀

A momentous occasion has unfolded in the world of space exploration, as German rocket company Isar Aerospace successfully launched a rocket to orbit from European soil for the first time. The groundbreaking 'Onward and Upward' mission saw its Spectrum rocket lift off from Andøya in northern Norway on Saturday, carrying a crucial payload of six commercial and educational CubeSats, alongside one non-deployable scientific experiment, into low Earth orbit.

This achievement represents a significant milestone for European space capabilities, which have historically lagged behind global competitors. Last year, out of more than 300 orbital launches worldwide, European efforts accounted for only seven, all originating from French Guiana in South America. The success of Isar Aerospace's launch signals a promising shift towards greater European autonomy in space access.

Josef Aschbacher, Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA), lauded the event, stating,

He further praised the German startup, remarking, "Spectrum quite literally rose to the challenge and delivered its payloads in low Earth orbit. An astounding achievement by German company Isar Aerospace, founded only eight years ago, and backed by the European Space Agency." The journey to this historic launch was not without its challenges.

The mission faced numerous delays, having initially been slated for January. An earlier launch attempt in March 2025 reportedly resulted in the two-stage rocket crashing back to Earth less than a minute after lift-off. However, Saturday's successful endeavor stands as a testament to perseverance and a vital step in developing an independent European launch service sector, reducing reliance on overseas or foreign launch infrastructure.

Isar Aerospace harbors ambitions to become a formidable European rival to Elon Musk's SpaceX, a company that dominated the market last year by accounting for over 90 per cent of the total payload mass sent to orbit. Daniel Metzler, CEO and co-founder of Isar Aerospace, proudly declared, "We achieved within a few years what had taken the European space industry decades before.
