A hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship has health officials on high alert. With confirmed cases in Canada and monitoring in the UK, here is the latest update.
Health authorities are on high alert following a hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. Canada's national health agency recently confirmed that a Canadian passenger has tested positive for the virus after returning from the vessel. The patient, a person in their 70s from the Yukon, is currently receiving care in a Victoria hospital. Their traveling partner, however, tested negative.
The situation isn't limited to Canada. In the United Kingdom, health officials are monitoring nine individuals who were in contact with a person carrying the virus. A medic with symptoms is also being treated in a UK hospital. This international response follows a string of cases tied to the ship’s recent travels in South America, where the outbreak is believed to have originated.
So far, the outbreak has claimed three lives, including a Dutch couple who were among the first exposed. With the Canadian case, the total number of positive tests linked to the ship has reached at least ten. While another patient in France is reportedly in critical condition, health agencies are emphasizing that the risk to the general public remains low.
Currently, all confirmed cases have been restricted to passengers or crew members from the MV Hondius. Those who have returned home are being kept in isolation to prevent any further spread. Global health organizations are working closely to track everyone who might have been exposed during the voyage.
