The music world mourns the loss of an icon as country legend Dolly Parton passed away last week at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. In accordance with her personal wishes, a private service was held on Friday, attended exclusively by her immediate family, ensuring a serene farewell for the beloved superstar.
While public memorials were eschewed by Parton, her estate has announced a vibrant, two-day festival dubbed "Dollyfest," set to celebrate her enduring legacy. The event will span consecutive weekends in Nashville and London in 2027. This festival was originally conceived by Parton herself to mark her 80th birthday in January 2026, with plans for her to host and perform.
However, following her health challenges, the event has been repurposed into a grand tribute. Danny Nozell, founder and CEO of CTK Enterprises and an organizer of the festival, shared insights into the transformation. "We had the venue booked and we had the announcement ready to go.
And then, in August 2025, Dolly had to take a step back after her initial health challenges,” Nozell stated. He added,
A lot of people always say, WWDD (What Would Dolly Do?), and, well, at this moment, Dollyfest is WDWD (What Dolly Would Do!).
This sentiment underscores the festival's commitment to honoring her spirit and vision.
Nozell further clarified the family's approach to memorialization, saying,
We are not discouraging people from celebrating Dolly in the ways they choose. However, as far as a traditional memorial goes, that is not something Dolly wanted.
He concluded, “So, instead, it feels more appropriate for us to take a beat, let all the tributes that immediately make sense occur naturally, and then, see through this festival-style concept that was truly dreamed up by Dolly." On Saturday, Parton's great-niece, Lainey Parton, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, "This is a really hard post for me to make.
I wanted to wait until after my granny was laid to rest yesterday before I tried to put any of this into words.” She fondly recalled, “From the time I was little, my granny always had a way of making me feel like I was enough. She never made my dreams feel too big." The announcement of Dollyfest ensures that while her physical presence is missed, her music, generosity, and indomitable spirit will continue to inspire generations.
