A massive fire has erupted at a waste facility in Deptford, Southeast London, with around 100 firefighters currently battling the blaze. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that the inferno, located on Landmann Way, involves approximately 50 tonnes of household waste.
Emergency services were alerted just before 8 PM, with 15 fire engines from Deptford, East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, and surrounding stations rushing to the scene. Eyewitnesses and online videos show significant flames and thick smoke billowing high above the buildings, visible from as far as Millwall.
Station Commander Duncan Rees confirmed the scale of the operation, stating that firefighters, along with blue light service colleagues, are working tirelessly under challenging conditions to bring the fire under control. Specialist equipment, including two large turntable ladders (32-meter and 64-meter), are being used as water towers to douse the flames from above.
Residents in the vicinity, particularly those affected by the heavy smoke, have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed for safety. The cause of this extensive fire is not yet known. Interestingly, the same facility experienced a fire in June, which destroyed a van and a car and required medical attention for one person.
The incident has also led to significant travel disruption. National Rail has announced that all lines between London Bridge/Canada Water and New Cross/New Cross Gate are blocked due to the fire affecting railway lines. This means train services in the area may face cancellations, severe delays of up to 100 minutes, or revisions, with major disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.
