Chinese leader Xi Jinping is set to visit North Korea, a strategically important yet often unpredictable neighbor for Beijing. This high-stakes diplomatic move comes as China aims to reassert its influence and navigate complex regional dynamics. While the two nations have historically described their relationship as "forged in blood" referencing the Korean War, recent years have seen growing mistrust strain these ties.

For Beijing, the primary goal of Xi's visit is likely to be less about fostering friendship and more about securing strategic leverage. This growing closeness between Pyongyang and Moscow has particularly unsettled Beijing. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, North Korea significantly expanded its military cooperation with Putin's regime, culminating in a mutual defense pact signed during Putin's 2024 visit to Pyongyang. Reports even suggest that thousands of North Korean soldiers have died fighting for Russia in Ukraine.
