Commission's Spring 2027: Growing Up, Not Giving Up Edge!
Designers Jin Kay & Dylan Cao redefine American sportswear for Spring 2027, blending mature sophistication with youthful rebellion. Discover their latest collection!
New York-based label Commission, led by designers Jin Kay and Dylan Cao, has unveiled its Spring 2027 Ready-to-Wear collection, marking a significant evolution for the brand that started in 2018. Known for their disruptive take on American sportswear, the duo is now exploring a more refined and elevated aesthetic while retaining their signature "off-kilter charm."
Cao described the season as "introspective," reflecting on their journey from their mid-20s to their 30s. This "second coming-of-age for the brand" sees them aiming for a collection that is both thought-provoking and chic, moving beyond the purely edgy. Despite this shift, the essence of Commission remains: unexpected combinations, casual fabrics used fancifully, and repurposed garments forming entirely new looks.
The collection draws inspiration from their youth, with subtle nods to suburban 2000s malls and house parties. However, the core idea was to translate a "young sense of scrappiness" and a rebellious attitude into a mature, grown-up wardrobe that still feels authentic and personal.
This vision is evident in both their womenswear and menswear.
A standout women's piece is a sharp black blazer with a princess seam and buckled neckline, offering a fresh take on a professional staple. Their classic black LBD is reimagined as a satin boxy version with faux epaulettes.
The most eye-catching frock is a plaid cotton dress with a western-style yoke and "shirt sleeves" that tie around the waist, achieving a full skirt with a horsehair underlay, a playful nod to childhood flannel shirts.
Commission's knack for slightly unconventional silhouettes shines through, now feeling more wearable. A white ruched halter top made from deconstructed T-shirts surprisingly pairs elegantly with sleek black pants. Kay mentioned "more feminine moments" with ruffles and hand-draping, including a statement top crafted from strips of upcycled band tees featuring icons like Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin.
The menswear is equally compelling.
A cropped leather moto vest features signature "sleeve" piping and western fringing.
A "Frankensteined" tuxedo shirt merges two styles, boasting different stripe sizes, cuff designs, and sleeve lengths, a perfect example of Kay's desire to play with familiarity while offering the unexpected.
Beyond the playful elements, the collection showcases meticulous attention to detail. C-shaped belt loops (for Commission) on jeans and dark brown contrast back pockets on perfectly tailored leather pants exemplify this.
The collection strikes a balance between "a dash of weird" and "a whole lot sleek," offering ideal dressing options for "cool-teens-developing-a-frontal-lobe." It's clear that Kay and Cao are creating pieces meant not just for editorial shoots, but for real-world wear, demonstrating their continued evolution and innovative spirit.
