Thrissur: Councillors and panchayat oath mark new term
All 56 Thrissur Corporation councillors and 30 district panchayat members take oath, kickstarting the new local government term with inaugural meetings.
Thrissur's two-tier local-government setup kicked off on Sunday as 56 councillors of the Thrissur Corporation and 30 district panchayat members were sworn in at separate ceremonies. The oath for the council took place in the corporation hall, while the oath for the district panchayat was conducted at the District Planning Bhavan. District Collector Arjun Pandian administered the oath to the senior-most councillor, M.L. Rosy, who represents the Kalathode division. Rosy then led the pledge for the rest of the councillors, signaling the start of the new term. The ceremony drew participation from Revenue Minister K. Rajan, MLA P. Balachandran, former mayors and councillors, and other public representatives.
Following the oath-taking, the first meeting of the newly elected Thrissur Corporation council was convened in the corporation hall, with Rosy presiding. The gathering set the tone for the upcoming term, outlining procedural steps and initial priorities.
Meanwhile, in the district panchayat oath ceremony at the District Panchayat Hall, Pandian administered the oath to the senior-most elected member, Mary Thomas, who was elected from the Vazhany division. Thomas then administered the oath to the remaining 29 members. Of the newly sworn-in panchayat members, nine took the oath in the name of God, while the remaining 21 opted for solemn affirmation. The ceremony was attended by Balachandran, former district panchayat president V.S. Prince, former vice-president Latha Chandran, and other members, after which the first district panchayat meeting was convened to initiate administrative functions.
With both bodies sworn in and initial meetings under way, officials said the new term would focus on transparent governance, development projects at the corporation and district level, and speeding up administrative processes.
