Meta extends Broadcom AI chip deal to power its personal superintelligence push
Meta widens its collaboration with Broadcom on custom AI processors through 2029, pledging over one gigawatt of computing capacity to power apps and future chip generations.
Meta is expanding its collaboration with Broadcom to design multiple generations of custom AI processors, a move aimed at boosting the computing backbone for AI features across its apps. The extended deal runs through 2029 and starts with a commitment of over one gigawatt of computing power, enough to power roughly 750,000 average U.S. homes. As part of the arrangement, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan will shift from Meta’s board into an advisory role on its custom chip strategy. The arrangement underscores a broader industry push to build in-house chips to meet surging AI demand and reduce reliance on Nvidia’s processors.
The expansion follows Meta’s unveiling of a four-chip roadmap and positions Broadcom as a key partner in both hardware design and networking. Broadcom’s Ethernet tech will connect Meta’s rapidly growing clusters of AI computers, enabling more efficient performance across Meta’s ranking and recommendation systems, among other AI-powered features. The first MTIA (Meta Training and Inference Accelerator) chip, the MTIA 300, is already in use for these systems, with three more generations planned through 2027. Later generations are expected to emphasize inference, the stage where AI models respond to user queries.
Beyond the technology, Meta is adjusting its governance as Tracey Travis, a board member since 2020, will not seek re-election. The broader partnership with Broadcom comes amid a wave of large tech firms building their own AI chips to diversify supply chains, lower costs, and gain tighter control over performance as AI workloads expand.
