A Russian Shahed drone has reportedly caused significant damage to a building designed to store spent nuclear fuel, located close to the disused Chornobyl nuclear power plant. This incident, described by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a deliberate and “extremely vile” attack, underscores heightened concerns over nuclear safety amidst the ongoing conflict.
The drone struck the reception building of the spent fuel storage facility around 2 am local time. While authorities confirmed that the structure was empty of spent fuel containers at the time of the attack, the targeting of such a sensitive site is seen as a potent message from Moscow. Zelenskyy sharply criticized the act, stating, “As of now, there is no heightening of radiation safety limits. But there is clearly a heightening of Russia’s already sky-high arrogance. It was [a] critical infrastructure facility. And an extremely vile Russian attack.”
Following the strike, a fire covering approximately 40 square meters erupted but was swiftly extinguished. Fortunately, no personnel were reported injured, and Ukraine’s state nuclear power operator, Energoatom, confirmed that radiation levels at the site remained within normal limits. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is preparing to dispatch experts to the site for further assessment, reiterating that while damage was significant, radiation levels stayed within established parameters.
Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, have strongly condemned the repeated targeting of nuclear facilities by Russian forces. Sybiha posted on X, “This is not the first time Russian forces are putting Ukrainian nuclear facilities at risk. Russia’s nuclear blackmail and threats to nuclear safety are systemic, deliberate, and unacceptable.” The spent fuel storage facility is crucial for providing long-term storage for spent nuclear fuel from Ukraine’s various nuclear power plants.
This latest strike comes as both sides engage in an intensifying battle of long-range aerial strikes, with high-profile locations on both sides reportedly being targeted. President Zelenskyy's condemnation also comes ahead of his scheduled meeting in London with key European leaders, including Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz, where discussions on the ongoing conflict are expected to be central. The incident highlights the persistent danger posed by the conflict to critical civilian infrastructure, particularly those with the potential for wider environmental and humanitarian consequences.
