KCR Summoned in Phone-Tapping Case Amid Vendetta Claims

Telangana's political arena shifted as K Chandrashekhar Rao, the BRS president and former chief minister, was summoned for questioning in the ongoing phone-tapping case. This marks the first time he has been asked to appear before investigators, a development that has supporters alleging political vendetta aimed at weakening the opposition.
The inquiry centers on the 2024 case, and officials say the summons require his appearance for interrogation. In response, the party underscored its belief that the move is politically motivated and urged observers to focus on due process rather than motives. The issue has already drawn sharp responses from BRS leaders who argue the case is being used to pressure the opposition ahead of key municipal elections.
In a related note, The Hindu reported that KCR requested a new date for examination. He said he could not appear on January 30 because that day coincides with the last date for filing nomination papers for elections to 123 urban local bodies—municipalities and municipal corporations. He added that he was preoccupied with authorizing party candidates for the ULB polls and should be examined at his current residence under the relevant CrPC provisions (Section 160). He also stated his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation and asked that all notices be served at his Erravalli address.
According to the report, KCR was surrounded by party colleagues at his Erravelli residence, including senior leaders who have previously already been examined in the case. The SIT has, so far, recorded statements from BRS leaders T. Harish Rao, K. T. Rama Rao, and J. Satosh Rao, as well as several former police officers and others connected to the inquiry. With the ULB polls looming, the case adds a new layer of pressure to Telangana’s political landscape, even as the investigation proceeds.
The investigation remains ongoing and no separate date has been announced for his examination.
