CSK's Shivam Dube has shifted away from his spin-destroyer image and into a pace-facing finisher role, a move that has reshaped his training and on-field duties this IPL 2026. In the nets, he isn’t milking spinners anymore; he’s facing pace-heavy drills, from wide yorkers and bouncers on the off-stump channel to short deliveries aimed at the body and back-of-length balls in the line of the stumps. The idea is to build comfort facing quicks, a focus that Hussey helped instill in the past when it came to facing fast bowling.
That evolution has kept the ‘match-ups’ at bay for a while, with opponents leaning on pacers and finding it hard to get the better of him. But this season, with MS Dhoni not around as the finisher and a top-heavy, inexperienced batting unit, CSK has pushed Dube back into a role far from his comfort zone. Earlier at Chepauk, he faced a 22 off 17 at No 6 after being dropped thrice in the same session. On the eve of that game, his struggles showed no end.
With CSK’s middle order crowded and the attack still in flux, Dube’s form has become a barometer for the team’s bid to stay in the race. His ongoing adaptation—balancing the need to finish games with a willingness to take on pace—will likely define CSK’s fortunes this season. If he can recapture his late-overs hitting, CSK’s middle order could start to click, even as the rest of the lineup learns to cope without a Dhoni-inspired finisher.
