A tragic train collision near Bedford on Friday evening has resulted in one fatality and left dozens injured, prompting a major emergency response and significant disruption to rail services. The incident involved two East Midlands Railway services, the 4:40 pm train from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3:50 pm service from Nottingham to London St Pancras.
Ambulance services confirmed that one person has died, with 11 individuals sustaining "very serious injuries" and 22 others suffering "serious injuries." Additionally, a further 56 people reported minor injuries in the devastating crash.
Emergency services, including the East of England Ambulance Service, quickly responded to the scene. Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust declared a "major incident," with both Bedford Hospital’s Accident and Emergency department and Luton and Dunstable University Hospital urging the public to attend only for "genuine medical emergencies" to allow for the treatment of casualties from the collision.
The collision has severely impacted rail travel, with all lines in the area blocked. East Midlands Railway confirmed that no services would run on the affected line for the rest of Friday. It remains unclear whether rail services between Bedford and Luton will resume on Saturday, as the operator has yet to announce its plans for the weekend. Investigations into the cause of this serious incident are expected to follow.
