Former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding, 44, has been arrested in Mexico after years on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He is accused of running a vast transnational drug trafficking operation that moved tonnes of cocaine across international borders. Wedding’s arrest marks a dramatic fall from representing Canada at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The operation he allegedly led is said to have imported around 60 metric tonnes of cocaine a year, with networks spanning North America as well as several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. U.S. officials have described Wedding as the largest supplier of cocaine to Canada, generating an estimated $1 billion in yearly revenue. He is also accused of murder, witness tampering, and money laundering, in addition to drug trafficking charges. A $15 million reward had previously been offered for information leading to his capture.
Authorities say Wedding was living in Mexico under the protection of the Sinaloa cartel. The FBI emphasized that no single agency or nation can combat transnational organized crime alone, highlighting the collaborative effort that led to his arrest. Canadian law enforcement leaders praised the operation, noting that the arrest makes communities in both countries safer. Wedding is expected to make his first court appearance soon, with extradition to the United States anticipated to follow.
