CBI officer who led RG Kar case bags Police Medal on Republic Day
A senior CBI official who supervised the RG Kar Medical College doctor’s rape-murder probe is among 31 officers awarded the Police Medal on Republic Day, highlighting commitment to justice.
New Delhi: On Republic Day, the government announced 31 CBI officers receiving the Police Medal for Distinguished Service, including V Chandrasekhar, the agency's joint director. Chandrasekhar, a 2000-batch IPS officer from the Gujarat cadre, supervised the probe into the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, a case that led to the conviction of the main accused within months of filing chargesheet.
As joint director, Chandrasekhar’s leadership of the investigation was cited as instrumental in delivering timely justice for the victim and for strengthening public confidence in the investigative process. Alongside him, several other CBI officers—Amit Srivastava, Additional Superintendent of Police; Mukesh Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police; Pramod Kumar Yati, Sub-Inspector; Chaman Lal, Assistant Sub-Inspector; and Head Constable Ramu Golla—were awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service for their sustained dedication and professionalism.
In addition to the 31 recipients of the Police Medal for Distinguished Service, twenty-five officers were honoured with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service. This included 2007-batch IPS officer C Venkata Subba Reddy, who was posted as a joint director, and his batchmate Sadanand Shakarrao Date, who left the agency as DIG to join his cadre as inspector general. Other notable awardees include Deputy Legal Advisor Manmohan Sharma; Additional SPs Baidyanath Samal and Kailash Sahu; Deputy SPs Rubi Choudhary, Manish Kumar Upadhyay, Anmol Sachan, Nishu Kushwaha, Arijit Sinha, Sharad Suresh Bhawar, Thahir Abbas P and Dharmendra Kumar. Inspector Dharmender; Programmer Deepti Vashista; ASI Vinod Kumar; Officer Superintendent Narikote Nandini; Head Constables Netram Chourasiya, Puran Mal Gujjar, Bhola Roy, Babu Varghese and Vikram Singh; and Constables Sanjeev Kumar, Waikhom Rajesh Singh and Rupendra Kumar were also recognised.
The government released the full list of awardees on Republic Day, underscoring the emphasis on valor, diligence, and sustained public service within the country’s investigative agencies.
