The UK government is stepping up its efforts to tackle a critical overcrowding crisis within its prison system, fast-tracking a substantial £110 million investment. This urgent funding is earmarked to accelerate the construction of hundreds of new prison places, a move Justice Secretary Alex Norris is set to outline to MPs on Tuesday.
The initiative forms a core part of wider ministerial plans to alleviate severe capacity pressures across the nation's correctional facilities.
Beyond the new capital, which has been reallocated from existing departmental budgets, officials are also actively converting vacant internal areas within existing jails into functional cells to maximize space. This two-pronged approach aims to bring immediate relief to the strained system.
Justice Secretary Alex Norris emphasized the government's commitment, stating,
This Government is serious about fixing the broken prison system we inherited, which is why we've already delivered more than 3,200 prison places in just two years. We're now investing to boost these efforts further, getting spades in the ground quicker to deliver thousands more places to lock up dangerous criminals and keep the public safe.
Adding to these efforts, a contract has been greenlit for a significant new 1,700-capacity prison set to be built in Lancashire, further expanding the estate. These measures come as an estimated 5,000 prisoners were anticipated for early release from October, a scheme designed to ease the immediate pressures of overcrowding.
Separately, recent policy discussions have addressed public concerns regarding the scope of early release programs.
Following significant public backlash, authorities have clarified that Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, convicted of Pc Andrew Harper's manslaughter in 2020, will be excluded from early release.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister has pledged to introduce legislation before the end of this Parliament to address the injustice of certain offenders serving indefinite prison sentences (IPP sentences), which were abolished in 2012, facilitating their release.
