Perumbavoor town in Kerala is headed for an intense local election, with the UDF, led by Congress, optimistic about retaining power with an improved majority and the CPI(M)-led LDF hoping to wrest control. The BJP, which currently has four council members, is aiming to double its tally in a contest that has traditionally swung between the two major fronts and independent candidates. In recent terms, Perumbavoor’s 27-ward council saw wafer-thin margins that often turned on the support of independents who contested and won in the wake of party splits. This time, two more wards have been added after delimitation, making 15 the majority mark for the 29-ward body, a threshold both fronts want to reach without falling into a no-confidence scenario.
The LDF and UDF have laid out their seat-sharing strategies: the LDF plans to contest 22 seats, with the CPI taking six and the Kerala Congress (M) one seat. In the UDF, Congress is expected to field candidates in 26 wards, with the Indian Union Muslim League and the Kerala Congress allotted two and one seats respectively. The BJP, aiming to double its representation from four, is seeking a stronger foothold in a traditionally competitive municipality.
Analysts note that voters have rewarded or punished incumbents based on local development, traffic management, and infrastructure, with both sides promising concrete improvements. The LDF campaign emphasizes perceived governance gaps under the UDF’s rule, while the UDF presents itself as the development-focused choice for residents. The BJP’s push reflects a broader trend of expanding footprints in Kerala’s municipal politics. In this volatile local environment, the outcome could hinge on how effectively parties translate their platforms into tangible services for residents.
Beyond the campaign trail, the State Election Commission has issued the election notification for the two-phase December polls, with nominations due by late November and subsequent scrutiny. This formalizes what already feels like a high-stakes contest for Perumbavoor’s future governance and the broader local political landscape.
