The flood situation in Assam remains dire as the death toll has tragically climbed to 62, with 14 new fatalities reported recently. More than 1.1 million people across 2,000 villages are currently suffering the devastating effects of the relentless downpour and rising waters. The state government is actively working to provide crucial support and relief to those impacted.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), seven individuals lost their lives in Charaideo on Friday alone, while six deaths were reported from Sivasagar and one from Jorhat. These recent figures bring Sivasagar's total flood-related fatalities to 27. Additionally, one person is reported missing. The districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat are among the worst-hit, with 3.48 lakh, 1.88 lakh, and 1.26 lakh people affected, respectively.
Despite a slight respite with comparatively less rainfall in the last 48 hours, causing some major rivers to show a falling trend, twelve districts are still battling the crisis. These include Golaghat, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Hojai, Nagaon, Biswanath, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Kamrup (M), and Karbi Anglong.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has affirmed that the situation remains grim. He stated that ministers are on the ground overseeing relief efforts, and he plans to revisit the affected districts within 2-3 days to personally monitor the measures. Over 41,000 people have sought refuge in the 162 relief camps established across the state.
In a bid to alleviate the suffering, the state government has released more than ₹111 crore to district authorities for managing the challenge. Essential supplies are being distributed continuously, with over 14,000 quintals of rice, 2,000 quintals of dal, and 58,820 liters of mustard oil already provided to affected communities. Mobile units from the health and animal husbandry departments are also deployed in every locality to offer crucial services.
