Debut Delight! Manav Suthar Shines as India Dominates Afghanistan Test

India has taken a commanding lead in the one-off Test against Afghanistan, largely thanks to a spectacular debut performance from left-arm spinner Manav Suthar in New Chandigarh. After declaring their first innings at a massive 564/8, India left Afghanistan reeling at 113/5 by the end of Day 2, trailing by a daunting 451 runs.

The strong foundation for India's imposing total was laid by a superb batting display. Captain Shubman Gill led the charge with a century, ably supported by KL Rahul, who also notched up a hundred. Contributions of 81 runs each from Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant further boosted the scoreboard. Washington Sundar remained unbeaten on 52, securing his sixth Test fifty, while Mohammed Siraj added a quickfire 22 runs before captain Gill called time on the innings.

Afghanistan's reply got off to a disastrous start, with Manav Suthar making an immediate impact in his very first Test over. The debutant spinner claimed Abdul Malik's wicket with an aggressive sweep attempt that ended up as a top-edge. Suthar continued to impress with remarkable discipline, bowling maiden after maiden, denying the Afghan batters any breathing room. His control eventually led to the dismissal of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, caught at slip.

The Indian pacers also contributed, with Prasidh Krishna striking twice, including a sharp nip-backer to dismiss Sediqullah Atal and later trapping captain Hashmatullah Shahidi lbw. Suthar rounded off his impressive day by snaring Afsar Zazai just before stumps, securing his third wicket. Amidst the collapse, Rahmat Shah showed some resistance for Afghanistan, finishing the day unbeaten on 43 and, in doing so, became the first Afghanistan batter to reach 1,000 Test runs.

Suthar's dream debut is a culmination of years of hard work and perseverance. Coming from a background where he was told cricket had no scope, his journey from street cricket to the international stage is truly inspiring. Receiving his Test cap from Kuldeep Yadav, Suthar's emotional reaction highlighted the significance of this moment for him and his family. His performance also drew high praise from teammate Washington Sundar, who hailed Suthar as a "genuinely special" talent. Sundar lauded the left-arm spinner's ability to generate turn, his relentless effort, and his strong grounding in red-ball cricket, especially after Suthar not only claimed 3 wickets but also contributed 28 runs with the bat earlier in the innings. India is now in a dominant position, poised for a comfortable victory in the one-off Test.
