A long-standing and contentious land dispute in Pariyathukavu, near Kizhakkambalam in Ernakulam district, has finally been resolved, bringing relief to several Dalit families who faced eviction. After decades of uncertainty, these families are now set to receive five cents of land each, along with new houses constructed by the government at the same location.
The significant breakthrough came after crucial discussions led by Higher Education Minister Roji M John. The meeting, held late on Saturday, involved representatives from the affected families, landowners, government officials, and local people's representatives. All parties involved accepted a consensus formula, leading to the agitation committee calling off its prolonged protest.
The dispute revolved around Dalit families who had been residing for many decades on land claimed by private parties. A court order for their eviction, based on ownership claims, had sparked widespread demands for rehabilitation and fueled considerable political controversy.
Minister John, addressing reporters post-meeting, emphasized that the agreement was forged by carefully balancing the interests of both the landowners and the affected families, while also acknowledging the court's verdict. Under the terms of the settlement, residents will be allotted five cents of land each on the disputed property, complete with access road facilities. The government has committed to constructing their new homes within a year.
Crucially, the families will be permitted to continue living in their existing homes until the new residences are completed. Both sides have agreed to formalize the settlement agreement within two days, which will then be submitted to the Kerala High Court through the Advocate General on June 16. Officials, including the Muvattupuzha Revenue Divisional Officer and DySP, have been tasked with overseeing the smooth implementation of this agreement and the housing project. This resolution marks a significant step towards ensuring justice and stable living conditions for the affected families.
