A former IPL coach calls for Lucknow Super Giants to swap Rishabh Pant with Aiden Markram as captain after a string of defeats, hoping for a quick IPL turnaround.
Lucknow Super Giants' latest setback came as they watched a 156-run chase unravel in a clash with Kolkata Knight Riders at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, leaving captain Rishabh Pant under the microscope after a string of poor results. The team has endured a tough run, including eight consecutive home losses under Pant since he took over the captaincy last year after a record 27.5 crore signing.
Wasim Jaffer, a former India batter and IPL coach, proposed a bold remedy: install Aiden Markram as captain. In a YouTube discussion, Jaffer suggested opening with Markram and Mitchell Marsh, slotting Pant at four, with Pooran at three, Ayush Badoni at five, Abdul Samad at six, and Mukul Choudhary at seven. His point was to free Pant to express himself as a batsman rather than a leader.
Pant has struggled for consistency as captain and even as a batsman this season. Since last season, he has managed 458 runs in 21 IPL innings with three fifties. He made 42 in the recent chase against KKR but could not see his side home, as KKR clinched a Super Over win.
Jaffer said a free-flowing player like Pant should not shoulder leadership responsibilities, arguing that a captaincy burden can blunt his natural game and that Markram would be better suited to steer the side while Pant focuses on his batting.
Whether LSG will shift leadership remains to be seen, but the debate highlights a wider question for a high-spending franchise in a demanding league: can a squad dynamic be improved by changing the armband without sidelining a prized asset? The coming games will reveal whether a leadership rethink is enough to stabilise a season that has produced more questions than wins.
