Delhi doubles 5 kg LPG quota for migrants and students amid fuel crunch

Delhi government on Tuesday announced a revised daily quota for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, aimed at stabilising fuel supplies for migrant workers and students amid disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict. The city now has 1,368 five-kilogram cylinders available each day under the new arrangement, a notable uptick intended to cushion households and institutions relying on subsidised LPG.

Officials said the allocation for migrant labourers and students has been doubled from 180 to 360 cylinders daily, described as 19 kg equivalent under the administration's standard metrics. Across sectors, the revised order contemplates a total of 6,480 cylinders (19 kg equivalent) available on a first-come-first-served basis, with essential services prioritised in the early distribution rounds.

Government sources emphasised that the move is part of a broader effort to stabilise energy supply and minimise shortages during a period of global energy volatility. The first-come-first-served approach is meant to ensure that those most in need—households of daily-wage migrant workers and students depending on affordable LPG—receive cylinders promptly.

While the Delhi policy is front-and-center, officials noted that similar steps are being discussed at the national level to safeguard LPG availability for critical sectors. The aim is to prevent disruptions to cooking fuel for vulnerable groups and institutions, in line with ongoing efforts to manage supply chains during the regional crisis.
