Officials said the incident occurred at 14:19 local time during what DHS described as a traffic stop of a Venezuelan national who allegedly tried to drive over agents. The driver fled the scene with a passenger, who has been described as a Venezuelan national as well. Portland Police said their officers were not involved in the shooting and arrived after the incident was reported, beginning their own investigation.
DHS added that the vehicle occupants were affiliated with the Tren de Aragua prostitution network and were involved in a recent Portland shooting. The District Attorney Nathan Vasquez was at the scene to monitor and assist, stressing the need for a thorough and complete investigation. The incident comes a day after a federal agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis, feeding nationwide scrutiny of federal operations in cities.
