UK Thunderstorm Alert: Festivals, Travel & Flooding Risks This Weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for heavy showers and thunderstorms across a significant portion of the UK, set to impact areas from south-west England and parts of Wales, across the Midlands to the east of England. This warning is active from midday until 9pm on Saturday, signaling a shift to more turbulent weather.

Forecasters anticipate intense downpours, with some regions potentially seeing 15-25mm of rain within an hour, and up to 30mm over two to three hours. Accompanying this could be hail and lightning. The Met Office has cautioned that such conditions make flooding of homes and businesses likely, alongside possible train delays and extended car journeys.

Major events are also in the path of this adverse weather.

Festivalgoers at popular music gatherings like Reading and Leeds are expected to face significant rain throughout Saturday as a low-pressure system pushes eastward. Even the cricket at Lord's in London is likely to be affected by showers.

In addition, the Environment Agency has placed four areas, primarily across the Midlands, under flood alerts, indicating that flooding remains a possibility.

This wet spell arrives in stark contrast to the continued hot and extremely dry conditions the UK has experienced recently, with the country on course for its hottest summer on record following five heatwaves and temperatures soaring up to 38.1C in London. Despite the challenging weather, attendees at Reading Festival on Friday were pictured embracing the elements, frolicking in the rain and mud, with many laughing and posing for photos, showcasing a resilient and good-spirited approach to the washout conditions.
