WhatsApp now lets Indian users top up prepaid numbers directly in the app with PayU, streamlining recharges and making everyday payments easier as it expands PayU-powered services.
WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature in India that lets users recharge prepaid mobile numbers directly inside the app, powered by PayU. The rollout is happening in phases across Android and iOS, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks. The service supports major operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vi and lets users choose a plan without leaving WhatsApp.
Here's how to use it: tap the ₹ icon on the home screen, select 'Mobile Prepaid Recharge', enter the number (self or someone else), pick an operator, choose a plan, and complete the payment using UPI, debit card, or credit card.
The feature also appears inside individual chats, so you can recharge or send money while messaging. The dedicated ₹ icon on the home screen brings you to payments and UPI services, integrating WhatsApp's payments and utilities more tightly into everyday tasks.
A Meta India executive said the move reflects WhatsApp's growing role in daily digital life, making it easier to stay connected and complete essential tasks without juggling multiple apps. The update builds on WhatsApp's broader push to expand its utilities in India, alongside existing services like bill payments.
It underscores WhatsApp’s goal of turning the app into a one-stop digital workspace in India.
