Hyderabad Road Renamed 'Donald Trump Avenue,' Sparks Political 'Hypocrisy' Row

Hyderabad has recently been in the spotlight following the ceremonial naming of a road near the United States Consulate as 'Donald Trump Avenue.' This decision by the Telangana government is seen as a significant gesture, described as a tribute to the United States and an acknowledgment of Hyderabad's increasing importance in fostering U.S.-India relations.

However, the road renaming quickly became a flashpoint for political contention, drawing sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP swiftly launched a stinging attack on the Congress party, accusing it of "hypocrisy pro max" in light of the new street name.

BJP leaders were quick to highlight previous statements made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, where he had voiced strong criticism of former US President Donald Trump and aspects of the India-US trade deal. Earlier this year, Gandhi had publicly attacked the Centre regarding the trade agreement, alleging that the Narendra Modi government had compromised national interests and conceded too much during negotiations with the Trump administration. He had also famously urged the US to "talk to us as equals" and accused the government of failing to adequately protect India's economic interests in the deal.

The BJP's argument posits that given the Congress party's past stance and its leader's vocal opposition to Trump and his administration's policies, the Telangana government's decision to name a road after him, especially in a state where Congress holds significant influence, demonstrates a blatant contradiction. The renaming ceremony, intended to symbolize strengthening international ties, has inadvertently fueled a domestic political debate, casting a spotlight on past political rhetoric concerning international diplomacy and trade.
