A horrific tragedy struck the city of Mangaf in Kuwait early Wednesday morning when a massive fire broke out in a six-story apartment building used as a labor camp. The blaze has claimed at least 49 lives, with officials confirming that about 40 of the victims are Indian nationals, many of whom hailed from Kerala. The fire started around 4:00 AM while most workers were still asleep, leading to a high number of casualties due to suffocation rather than direct burns.
Malayali organizations in Kuwait, including the Kerala Muslim Cultural Committee (KMCC), have mobilized quickly to support the victims' families and friends. Volunteers are currently stationed at various hospitals, including Adan, Jahra, and Sabah, to assist with identification and provide solace to those in shock. Syed Nasar Al Mashoor Thangal, a local community leader, noted that the community has never faced a disaster of this scale before, and their primary focus remains on offering every possible kind of help during this dark time.
Among the victims was Binoy Thomas from Chavakkad, who had arrived in Kuwait just five days before the incident to start a new chapter of his life. Reports indicate that other natives from Kannur and Kasaragod are also among the deceased. The building, which housed four apartments on each floor with multiple laborers crowded into each room, reportedly flouted several fire safety regulations. Firefighters faced significant challenges entering the structure to reach those trapped inside due to the layout and conditions.
While official investigations are ongoing, some survivors suspect a gas cylinder explosion in the watchman’s room might have triggered the disaster. There are also concerns regarding the illegal sale of gas cylinders in the area, which may have contributed to the fire's intensity. For now, the focus remains on the 50 injured survivors receiving treatment and the heartbreaking process of repatriating the remains of those who lost their lives while working far from home.
