Google Health Adds AI Coaching as Fitbit Air Debuts Screenless Wearables
Fitbit Air brings AI-powered coaching to Google Health, offering 24/7 tracking with a screenless design for focused, continuous wellness.
Google Health is expanding its wellness play by pairing with Fitbit to offer AI-assisted coaching for Fitbit users. The rollout centers on a new screenless wearable, the Fitbit Air, pitched as a proactive wellness partner that stays on 24/7 with high-fidelity sensors for constant health and fitness tracking.
Fitbit Air is designed to be worn continuously, with a pebble-like form factor that is 25% smaller than the Fitbit Luxe and 50% smaller than the Inspire 3. The absence of a screen is intentional, aimed at helping users avoid constant notifications and stay more focused on their activities while still collecting precise data.
On its sensors, the device tracks heart rate, blood oxygen levels (SpO2), resting heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep stages and duration, and can monitor for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) alerts. It also features automatic workout detection, with machine learning refining accuracy over time, making it easier to log activity without manual input.
The Fitbit Air connects to the newly launched Google Health app, which replaces the older Fitbit app. Inside the app, users get access to an AI-powered personal health coach that provides personalized recommendations. The coach can even analyse photos of gym equipment or routines to log activity, adding a practical, visual element to goal setting and progress tracking.
Some observers have described the Fitbit Air as a Whoop-style competitor in the wearables market, signaling rising competition in continuous, data-driven wellness tracking. Google's approach with a screenless design and AI-driven coaching marks a broader shift toward integrated, proactive health management that blends hardware with intelligent software.
Overall, this move signals a deeper push by Google into health services, leveraging Fitbit’s hardware with Google Health’s AI capabilities to offer more personalized, around-the-clock wellness support. The combination aims to help users cultivate healthier habits with less distraction, while still delivering granular insights into sleep, recovery, and daily activity.
