Moderate rainfall lashed the national capital on Saturday morning, transforming several parts of Delhi into watery stretches and causing significant disruption. Residents found themselves wading through knee-deep water, while traffic crawled at a snail's pace, leading to widespread frustration.
In response to the growing concerns, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took to the streets for a surprise inspection of the waterlogged areas, particularly near Sadbhavna Park in east Delhi.
She promptly directed officials to deploy pumps and expedite efforts to clear the accumulated water.
The Chief Minister underscored the critical need for all departments to work with "complete promptness and coordination" to ensure that Delhi residents are spared further inconvenience due to the monsoon showers.
The impact of the downpour was felt across key locations, with reports of severe waterlogging surfacing from National Highway 48 near Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Mahipalpur, and Sangam Vihar. Delhi Police also issued an alert on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday morning, warning commuters of "continuous heavy rainfall, severe waterlogging" affecting traffic movement on Road No. 210, specifically between Rotary Chowk-DJB Chowk/Office and towards Omaxe in Dwarka.
This wasn't an isolated incident, as the international and domestic terminals of the Delhi airport had already experienced heavy waterlogging on Friday.
Adding to the urgency, senior officials from the Delhi government conducted a crucial inspection of the route from Bharat Mandapam, the venue for the upcoming BRICS summit, to IGI Airport. With the summit scheduled for September 12 and 13 next week, the aim was to identify and rectify any potential issues that could hinder smooth movement for dignitaries.
According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi experienced
light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning at most places and heavy rain at isolated places over Delhi during the past 24 hours.
The Safdarjung weather station, a key observatory for the city, recorded 37.3 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by an additional 29.8 mm from then until 5:30 p.m. The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rainfall for Sunday, indicating that the wet spell is not yet over.
Residents are advised to plan their commutes accordingly and exercise caution on the roads.
