Amazon’s Zoox Rolls Out Driverless Taxi Service in Las Vegas
Zoox rolls out a fully driverless robotaxi in Las Vegas, offering free rides to Resorts World, Area15 and more as it vies with Tesla and Waymo amid regulatory challenges.
On Wednesday, Amazon's (AMZN) Zoox introduced its robotaxi service in Las Vegas, increasing the stakes in the competition for self-driving taxis and competing against Tesla (TSLA), Google's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo, Uber (UBER), and Lucid (LCID). In the upcoming months, Zoox plans to expand the service to more destinations. Initially, it will be free and transport users to and from Resorts World Las Vegas, Area15, Topgolf, and other resorts and entertainment venues.
CEO Says
“The autonomous vehicle industry has made remarkable strides this year, bringing us closer to a future of safer, more accessible mobility,” Zoox CEO Aicha Evans said in a statement.
“With the launch of our fully driverless ride-hailing service using a purposefully designed robotaxi, we're thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking journey," she added.
Due to stringent regulations, public outcry, federal investigations, and high startup costs, commercializing robotaxis has proven more difficult than anticipated. As one of the few competitors remaining in the race for autonomous vehicles, which, if successful, could yield significant profits, Amazon purchased Zoox for $1.3 billion in 2020.
Zoox anticipates launching the paid service within the next few months and is currently pursuing regulatory clearances for it. Remote human assistance will only be available when the vehicle requests it, and the vehicles will primarily operate independently.
The Race for Autonomy
According to executives, Zoox will "very soon" extend the service to San Francisco, where it has been testing for months and is currently putting users on a waiting list. Miami, Austin, and Texas will be added, and later this year or early next year, Atlanta and Los Angeles will follow, they stated.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, Tesla has launched a ride-hailing service with a safety driver who makes use of its autonomous driving technology. Waymo serves the Bay Area, as well as portions of Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, with a fleet of about 2,000 vehicles.
