If Burnham wins the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, he would be required to resign as Manchester mayor, triggering a new mayoral contest expected by August 6. Starmer emphasized the importance of securing another Labour victory in Manchester and even suggested he would offer Burnham a cabinet position, stating, "I hope he wins the by-election and he'll play a big part in the Labour government." The Prime Minister described a potential leadership contest as a "bad thing" for the country and reiterated his intent to fight any challenge.
