A discarded upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is on an unprecedented collision course with the Moon today, marking a unique event for astronomers and space enthusiasts alike. The impact is anticipated to occur on the Moon's western limb, specifically targeting the Einstein Crater. This particular rocket piece, roughly the size of a five-story building and weighing about 4,000kg (8,800 lbs), was originally part of a US and Japanese mission launched last year to deploy lunar landers and scientific equipment.
While reusable parts of the Falcon 9 typically return to Earth, this upper stage was shed in space and remained in orbit, destined eventually for a celestial collision. Astronomer Bill Gray, who has been tracking the object, predicts the impact will create a new crater potentially more than 17 meters (56 feet) in diameter. The Einstein Crater itself is visible from Earth and is expected to be illuminated by sunlight at the time of impact.
Experts suggest that while the Moon has endured countless impacts over billions of years, this particular crash could be a "useful accident." Scientists are keen to study the implications of such a direct, known impact, which could provide valuable data on the Moon's subsurface and crater formation dynamics.
