London Bus Strikes Halted! Drivers Vote on New Arriva Deal Amid Heatwave Dispute
Major disruption averted for now as over 1,500 Arriva North London bus drivers postpone strikes to vote on a new offer addressing hot weather working conditions. What's next?
Planned industrial action by more than 1,500 bus drivers in London has been put on hold, bringing a temporary halt to disruptions across the capital. Members of the Unite union, employed by Arriva North London, had already staged walkouts on Friday and Tuesday, protesting against what they describe as unbearable hot weather working conditions.
Further strikes, initially scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, were suspended following constructive talks that led to a fresh offer from Arriva. This new proposal will now be put to a ballot for the drivers to decide its fate. However, Unite has issued a clear warning: if the offer is rejected by its members, strike action will resume as early as Tuesday, August 25.
Unite regional officer Steven Stockwell confirmed the development, stating,
Following talks, Arriva has made an offer to Unite members. To allow our members to have their say on whether to accept this, we have postponed strike action so they can be balloted.
The dispute centers on the union's claims that Arriva North London has failed to adequately address working conditions during periods of extreme heat.
Drivers from eight key bus garages, including Barking, Edmonton, Enfield, Grays, Palmers Green, Stamford Hill, Tottenham, and Wood Green, are involved in the industrial action. The union highlights that most Arriva buses are equipped with air cooling systems rather than more effective air conditioning, leaving drivers exposed to dangerously high temperatures.
They assert that bus cabs can soar to over 40 degrees Celsius, posing serious health risks such as heatstroke, exhaustion, fatigue, dehydration, and dizziness. This industrial action comes in the wake of a challenging summer for the UK, marked by drought and a series of extreme heatwaves.
The Met Office even reported the hottest day of the year recently.
Unite is pressing Arriva to install proper air conditioning across its fleet to ensure the safety and well-being of its drivers.
