Mamata Dares Rebels to Join BJP Amid TMC Turmoil & Key Resignation!
Mamata Banerjee blasts Trinamool rebels, daring them to join BJP as party faces mass defections and Bengal chief Chandrima Bhattacharya's shock resignation.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has broken her weeks-long silence, delivering a scathing attack on party rebels. She accused them of "betrayal" after winning on the party symbol and boldly challenged them to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“The party was like a mother to you and you have betrayed it,” Ms. Banerjee stated during a social media live session. Her remarks come amidst significant internal strife within the TMC, following the party’s defeat in the recent Assembly polls. A majority of MLAs and Lok Sabha MPs have switched their loyalties, leading to a visible split in the party ranks. “You will support the BJP and then claim to be Trinamool, but that cannot happen, because the ideology of Trinamool is against the BJP,” she asserted, emphasizing the ideological divide.
The political turmoil deepened with the resignation of Chandrima Bhattacharya from all party positions. Ms. Bhattacharya, who had only been appointed as the TMC’s Bengal chief a month prior, stepping into the role previously held by veteran organiser Subrata Bakshi, cited personal reasons in her resignation letter. Her departure marks a fresh blow to the party already grappling with widespread defections and internal dissent.
Ms. Banerjee did not mince words, daring those she labeled as "dishonest and traitors" and "sponsored by the BJP" to formally align with the opposition. "With the support of the BJP, you want to break the party. What do you think, am I dead?" she questioned rhetorically, highlighting her defiance.
Her comments were made just two days after rebel MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee, appeared before the Election Commission of India (EC). The EC has reportedly sought responses from both factions of the party regarding the ongoing disputes. Addressing concerns about the party symbol, Ms. Banerjee expressed confidence that it would remain with the TMC. However, she also remarked that even if the symbol were to be taken away, it would not matter, as the people would ultimately decide the true Trinamool Congress.
