Chilling Revelation: Bin Laden Eyed UK for Attacks Years Before 9/11

Previously top-secret documents released by America’s spy agency, the CIA, have unveiled a chilling revelation: al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden had Britain on his hitlist as early as 1998, years before the devastating 9/11 terror attacks.

These newly declassified presidential memos, known as President's Daily Brief (PDB) products, show that the CIA had "strong indications" that Bin Laden intended to attack the UK on its own soil. The files were made public by CIA director John Ratcliffe to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, which tragically claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people from over 90 nations, including 67 British citizens.

The spy agency’s aim in releasing this trove of previously confidential files is to offer Americans a deeper insight into sensitive intelligence from the period leading up to and immediately following one of the nation’s darkest moments. The collection comprises 71 redacted briefing notes, which collectively "trace the story of CIA analysts’ evolving understanding" of al-Qaida and their efforts to highlight and warn of Bin Laden's plotting, despite often working with "sparse, vague, and imperfect information."

Significantly, the documents contain several references to Bin Laden's plans to hijack planes.

One particular detail mentions the possibility that a group "may fly an explosive-packed airplane into a US city." While these specific plots were focused on the US, a separate document explicitly named the UK as a target.

The PDB is a confidential dossier presented to the US President daily, summarizing the most critical global threats, national security issues, and intelligence analyses. One such document, dated August 28, 1998, and titled "Bin Ladin Terrorist Network Still a Threat," confirmed that Bin Laden (spelled 'Bin Ladin' in the files) was actively looking to target the United Kingdom.

This revelation highlights the extensive and long-standing nature of the threat posed by al-Qaida long before their most infamous attack.
