"Ray Gunn" Trailer Drops: Brad Bird's Sci-Fi Noir Hits Netflix!
Dive into the retrofuturistic world of "Ray Gunn"! Brad Bird's animated sci-fi noir, starring Sam Rockwell & Scarlett Johansson, promises a thrilling murder mystery on Netflix. Get ready for December 18th!
The long-awaited animated sci-fi noir film, "Ray Gunn," from acclaimed director Brad Bird, has finally unveiled its first trailer, sparking immense excitement among fans. Netflix is set to release this visually stunning movie, which boasts a star-studded voice cast including Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits.
Set in a captivating world called Metropia, the film presents an alternate future envisioned through the sophisticated visual language of 1939. At its heart is Raymond Gunn, a seasoned private detective voiced by Sam Rockwell.
He finds himself embroiled in a complex case that intertwines murder, extraterrestrial life, and the tumultuous life of Venus Nova, a colossal multimedia superstar whose escalating public scandals threaten her life and career.
Scarlett Johansson lends her voice to Venus, while Tom Waits voices Eyera, Ray's quirky one-eyed alien partner.
Interestingly, Ray's profession as a private investigator has largely been rendered obsolete by technology.
Tiny "pry bots" now handle much of the investigative work, leaving Ray and Eyera among the dwindling few who still adhere to traditional detective methods. This blend of old-school grit and futuristic advancements is precisely what director Brad Bird aimed for, describing the film as "The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers." This vision is strikingly evident in the trailer, which showcases Art Deco skyscrapers, sleek flying cars, and aliens seamlessly integrated into human society, all within a city whose polished exterior thinly veils deep-seated corruption and violence.
Bird revealed that the concept for "Ray Gunn" originated over 30 years ago, even before his iconic work on "The Iron Giant," making it a passion project he has nurtured throughout his career. The extensive voice cast further includes talents such as Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck, and Patton Oswalt.
Bird directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Matthew Robbins, based on his original story, with Michael Giacchino composing the score. "Ray Gunn" is scheduled to premiere at the prestigious BFI London Film Festival before opening in select U.S. theaters, including limited 70mm engagements, on December 4.
The global streaming release on Netflix will follow shortly after, on December 18, allowing audiences worldwide to immerse themselves in this unique sci-fi noir adventure.
