Legendary Urdu Poet Bashir Badr Passes Away at 91 in Bhopal

The literary world is in mourning today following the passing of the legendary Urdu poet, Dr. Bashir Badr. At the age of 91, the Padma Shri awardee breathed his last at his residence, 'Bashir Manzil', in Bhopal after a long period of illness. His wife, Rahat Badr, shared the somber news on social media, asking for prayers for the departed soul.

Born in Ayodhya in 1935, Bashir Badr's journey through the world of words was nothing short of extraordinary. He was a scholar who earned both his bachelor’s and doctorate degrees from Aligarh Muslim University. His talent was recognized so early that his poems were included in the university curriculum even before he had finished his postgraduate studies. He later dedicated many years to teaching Urdu, serving as the head of the department at Meerut College for nearly two decades.

Dr. Badr was not just a poet; he was a revolutionary who breathed new life into the Urdu ghazal. He is credited with modernizing the art form, making it accessible and resonant for a new generation. With over 10,000 poems and seven published collections of ghazals, his work defined the 'Nayi Ghazal' movement. His famous lines, such as 'Dushmani jam kar karo lekin...' continue to be quoted by poetry lovers across the globe.

Throughout his illustrious career, he received numerous accolades, most notably the Padma Shri in 1989 for his immense contribution to literature. Fellow poets and admirers remember him as a trendsetter who gave the ghazal a fresh idiom and a grander stature. He passed away in the very room where he used to host vibrant poetic gatherings, leaving behind a void that the world of Urdu literature will find difficult to fill.
