Dhaka mourns Sharif Osman Hadi's death as protests surge
Bangladesh declares a day of mourning after Sharif Osman bin Hadi is assassinated in Singapore, while Dhaka faces anti-India protests and a cautious visa service restart.
Bangladesh declared a day of state mourning after youth leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi was assassinated in Singapore. The development has unsettled political circles at home, and in Dhaka thousands took to the streets, demanding an end to alleged conspiracies and the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Anti-India protests in the capital intensified as demonstrators gathered at major intersections, urging authorities to address perceived external meddling. Police urged restraint and warned against violence as crowds swelled.
Away from the street, a diplomatic note of cautious pragmatism emerged as India resumed visa services in Dhaka, even as several centers remained closed due to security concerns.
Analysts say the weekend's events reflect a fraught moment in regional politics, with a mix of youth activism, national security anxieties, and shifting ties shaping life in Dhaka.
