Mauricio Pochettino has officially signed a contract extension, cementing his role as the head coach of the United States national team through to the 2030 World Cup. U.S. football made the exciting announcement on Monday, August 3, 2026, confirming the 54-year-old’s commitment to lead the team for the next several years.
Pochettino, who took the helm in 2024, recently guided the USA to the last 16 at the World Cup, which the nation proudly co-hosted with Canada and Mexico. This marked a significant achievement, as the Americans won three matches at a World Cup for the first time in their history. Their journey ended after a challenging encounter with Belgium, following a controversial FIFA decision regarding striker Folarin Balogun’s red card.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the future, the Argentinian coach stated, "It has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the men's national team program even stronger." He added, "The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here… We want to try to have a lasting impact on the sport in the country that has welcomed us so warmly and for that impact to extend beyond results on the field." His coaching staff have also secured new contracts, ensuring continuity.
Before his successful World Cup campaign, Pochettino, known for his stints with top European clubs like Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain, took over from Gregg Berhalter. Berhalter's departure followed the team's group-stage exit from the 2024 Copa America, which the USA also hosted. Under Pochettino’s guidance, the team quickly rebounded, reaching the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, though they ultimately lost 2-1 to Mexico.
While there had been speculation about his potential return to European club football, Pochettino's decision to remain with the US team is a strong signal of confidence.
