GRAP Stage IV Enforced Across NCR as Delhi AQI Surges
Stage IV measures kick in across the NCR as Delhi battles severe air pollution, with a construction ban and tighter curbs aimed at protecting public health.
Delhi is jolted into emergency mode as Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is activated across the National Capital Region due to a sharp rise in air pollution. The move comes after the Air Quality Index breached the 450 threshold, placing the city in the 'Severe+' category. Under GRAP-IV, sweeping restrictions join existing Level I-III measures, with a landmark ban on construction and demolition activities across Delhi aimed at cutting emissions quickly.
Visible signs of the crisis were evident around Anand Vihar, India Gate, and Kartavya Path, where dense smog reduced visibility and air quality deteriorated sharply, with the AQI around the 400s for much of Saturday evening.
Ahead of the weekend, CPCB data showed the 7 pm AQI at 448 and the 24-hour average previously at 349, placing the city in a highly unhealthy category. Projections from the Air Quality Early Warning System indicate the air could remain in the severe range on Sunday before easing to very poor by Monday.
Stage IV adds to the restrictions already in place under Stages I-III, including tightened controls on vehicular movement, industrial emissions, and non-essential construction. Authorities will monitor the situation closely and adjust measures as needed to protect public health.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, use masks, keep windows closed when possible, and follow official advisories. Schools and workplaces may adjust plans based on local conditions, and commuters should plan for longer travel times due to restrictions.
Looking ahead, officials expect some improvement in the early part of next week, but the city remains on high alert as pollution levels can spike quickly in winter months.
