India Cuts Fuel Export Duties: Petrol Now Nil! ⛽📉

The Indian government has announced a significant cut in export duties on petroleum products, bringing the levy on petrol exports down to zero. This move, part of a fortnightly review aimed at ensuring sufficient domestic fuel availability, also sees reductions in duties for diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).
Under the latest review, the export duty on petrol has been completely removed. For diesel, the levy has been decreased to ₹24 per litre, down from ₹25.5 per litre. Similarly, the export duty on ATF has been lowered to ₹19.5 per litre from its previous rate of ₹22 per litre. It's important to note that there has been no change in the excise duty rates for petrol and diesel intended for domestic consumption.
These fortnightly reviews were initiated on March 27, following the escalation of conflict in West Asia earlier this year. The government's objective is to constantly monitor and adjust export levies, effectively discouraging exports when domestic supply needs to be prioritized. This mechanism helps maintain stability in the retail fuel market within the country.
In the previous review, just before this announcement, the government had actually increased the export levy on petrol to ₹3.5 per litre, on diesel to ₹25.5 per litre, and on ATF to ₹22 per litre. This latest reduction signals a shift in strategy, likely reflecting an improved assessment of domestic supply or global market conditions. The continuous adjustments highlight the government's proactive approach to managing the nation's energy security and pricing.
