SpaceX has made headlines with its first earnings report, revealing a significant dip in its shares despite massive spending on Artificial Intelligence. This news comes as CEO Elon Musk claims investors are "underestimating" the company's future potential.
Analysts like Matt Britzman of Hargreaves Lansdown suggest that with Musk "going all in" on data centers, SpaceX could soon resemble an "AI infrastructure company with an extraordinary space business attached." While Starship and future Starlink generations are crucial for the company's post-2030 vision, AI is projected to be the primary financial driver in the coming years.
Despite Musk's confidence, the financial picture is mixed. Brady Wang from Counterpoint Research notes that Starlink's subscription numbers are strong, making it the only SpaceX business unit currently generating an operating profit. The AI ventures, however, are still operating at a loss as investment costs escalate, leading some analysts, like Fabien Yip from IG, to question whether the entire company is truly being underestimated.
Wendy Souvannarath, CEO of Carré Partners, an investor in SpaceX, defended the strategy, stating that "every tech giant is spending like this right now" on AI. She views SpaceX's AI investment as a running cost, anticipating a return within a year. However, the recurring controversies surrounding Musk's public persona remain a "live risk" for investor sentiment, as noted by Yip. Despite historical achievements and high market valuations, SpaceX continues to face challenges in consistently maintaining investor enthusiasm.
