Born 54 years ago in Mobile, Alabama, she endured a brutal childhood marked by relentless bullying for being effeminate, verbal abuse from her mother, and sexual abuse as a teenager. The silent exclusions of poverty were a stark reality, even during her time at the Alabama School of Fine Arts on scholarship. Later, transitioning in the 1990s as a Black trans woman, she faced constant street harassment and violence. Having survived such adversity, Cox is resolute in her refusal to stay silent now. The current political climate, particularly what she describes as "Trump’s attacks on trans rights," has had a direct and severe impact on her life and career. Cox revealed that she has lost an astonishing 90 percent of her income. Even gigs teaching acting classes were rescinded because, as she explained, it "could be perceived as promoting trans ideology." This stark reality underscores the pervasive challenges faced by the trans community, even by its most prominent voices.
