Microsoft pledges $17.5 billion to build India's AI-first future, strengthening infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities amid a broader semiconductor push.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met with Prime Minister Modi and hailed an inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity, announcing a US$17.5 billion investment to help build the country’s AI-first future. It’s described as the largest investment ever by Microsoft in Asia and is aimed at developing infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities to support India's AI ambitions.
Nadella conveyed via X that the commitment will back India’s ambitions and stressed it as a landmark step in Asia, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a global AI hub as it hosts a massive internet population outside of China. Modi replied that the discussion was very productive and echoed optimism about Microsoft’s landmark investment in Asia, adding that India’s youth will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage AI for a better planet.
Beyond the software and AI push, India is also pursuing hardware partnerships to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem. Intel and Tata Group have signed MoUs to manufacture and assemble semiconductors in India, including advanced AI laptop chips and packaging technologies. The collaboration aims to enhance cost- effectiveness, accelerate market entry for AI PCs, and bolster India’s semiconductor capabilities as part of a broader AI and electronics strategy.
