Volcano Chaos: Anak Krakatau Erupts, Stranding 150K Passengers!

Indonesia is grappling with widespread travel chaos after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at eight airports, including Jakarta's bustling Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The closure has left more than 150,000 passengers stranded and impacted 712 flights, causing significant disruption to both domestic and international travel.

Ash from Anak Krakatau was first detected in the airspace near Jakarta on Sunday morning, prompting the initial closure of Soekarno-Hatta. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi urged airlines to consider diverting some flights to alternative airports and to expedite refund processes for affected passengers. He also emphasized the importance of providing timely information to those with upcoming flights to prevent overcrowding at airports.

The volcanic activity began late on Friday night with continuous seismic activity, spectacular lava fountains, and booming sounds echoing across surrounding regions.

Authorities confirmed two more significant eruptions early on Sunday.

The transport ministry specified that the pause in operations particularly affected flights connecting to and from Singapore, as well as other major international routes including Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur.

The decision to extend airport closures was made after tests confirmed that volcanic ash had spread towards West Java.

Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG, reported that ash plumes reached staggering heights, soaring as high as 20,000 feet (6,000m) on the Java side east of the volcano and an astounding 50,000 feet (15,000m) on the Sumatra side to the west.

While the travel disruptions are extensive, authorities have confirmed that there is currently no tsunami threat following this latest series of eruptions.
